AFCON 2019 : Ighalo subdue stubborn Burundi

Second half substitute, Odion Jude Ighalo’s 77th minute goal for the Super Eagles crumbled the resistance of stubborn Burundi in the opening group b game at the AFCON 2019 tournament played at the Alexandria stadium, Egypt on Saturday evening.

Ighalo, who scored seven goals in the qualifiers threatened the defence of Burundi immediately he was introduced into the game and he crowned his efforts with a tremendous finish inside the box after a lovely pass from Ola Aina.

Nigeria had more ball possession and total dominance of the game. Despite this, Burundi proved very difficult nut to crack in the game, almost shocking their more illustrious opponents in the first half, but Daniel Akpeyi in goal for the Super Eagles had the answers.

Speaking after the game, Mikel Obi, captain of the team said it was a tough game, but very important to get the first win in the opening group game.

“It was a very difficult game. We played against a team that loves to run a lot. It is very crucial that we won the first game and it is a big relief. We will take each game as it comes.” Mikel said.

Super Eagles will play Guinea in her second game on Wednesday.
