EXCLUSIVE : How being shortchanged by a Nigerian club triggered my move to Europe – Former Super Eagles player reveals

Reminiscing on his laudable football career that made him to win football gold medal for Nigeria at the Atlanta ’96 Olympics and his active participation for the Super Eagles at the France ’98 World Cup, Mobi Oparaku has revealed what triggered his move to Europe, totorimews reports exclusively.

His destination was Anderlecht RSC of Belgium after the victorious Japan ’93 Golden Eaglets won the FIFA U 17 World Cup for the second time in the history of Nigeria, although he had already signed for Iwuanyanwu Nationale now known as Heartland FC.

According to Oparaku he signed for Iwuanyanwu Nationale for the 1993/94 season, but his exploits in Japan already attracted a football scout from Belgium that met him in Japan and followed him to Nigeria.

Nationale was supposed to sign for N10,000.00 then but the club management gave him N2,000.00 instead which angered and triggered his exit from the Nigerian league to join Anderlecht of Belgium.

“I was supposed to be paid N10,000.00 by Iwuanyanwu Nationale as sign – on fees but the club gave me N2,000.00. I was not happy with the development. So I had to accept the offer that Andre brought to me,” Oparaku told totorinews exclusively.

“Before then, I had misunderstanding with my elder brother, who felt I was too small to leave Nigeria to go and play football in Belgium.

He wanted me to play for Iwuanyanwu Nationale, but after the club gave me N,2000.00 instead of the N10,000.00 agreed, I felt there was no need to remain in Nigeria again as Anderlecht were willing to sign me.

“I had to follow Andre to Belgium where I signed for Anderlecht,” he said.
