Exposed: How Awoniyi spent his World Cup money in 2013

Taiwo Awoniyi, Olympic Eagles striker has revealed what he did with the money he got from the Federal Government of Nigeria when the Golden Eaglets won the Under 17 FIFA World Cup in 2013.

Speaking to totorinews in Asaba after Nigeria walloped Libya 4-0 to qualify for the next round of CAF Under 23 Nations Cup tournament, the Belgium based attacker, plying his trade with Royal Excel Mouscron on loan from English premier league side, Liverpool, revealed that education is the ultimate priority of his father and due to the poor finacial condition of his family then, his civil servant father had to borrow money most times to offset the education bills of his children.

Fortunately, financial fortune smiled at his way after the triumph of the Golden Eaglets and he had to immediately use part of the money to settle the debts the father was owing people as a result of wanting his children to be educated.

“Knowing the condition my family was when Golden Eaglets won the FIFA Under 17 World Cup in 2013, the money  I got was given to my father to pay all the debt he was owing as a result of borrowing to pay the school fees and any other educational needs of his children.” Awoniyi said.

“I am the only  child of my father that is not in the university because of football. Football has taken me to the Under 15, 17, 20 and Under 23, signing for Liverpool and going on loan.

“My father knows I love football . He normally tells me then that I am not saying you should not pay football ,but you must also pass in the school.

“The moment i passed in school , there was no problem , but once my result was not good enough, that was when we had issues of today no training, you must read your books,” he said.
